Things are getting back to normal - I've been busy in the studio working on my Archibald portrait of the Australian actor John Waters. I've also been working on several works in progress I've had on the go to clear the backlog - here's more of my pastel wolves.

Pottered in the studio for the first time in ages today. Did a little more on the pastel wolves - started laying in the fur on the second wolf as well as adding in some of the finer detail on the second one. Hopefully I'll get a bit more done over the next fortnight. Still off work after my heart attack, still need to rest and recover.

Working on this one slowly, not doing much since my heart attack last Sunday, concentrating more on relaxing and getting back on track. The coat on the first wolf is starting to take shape, and I hope to make some progress on the second wolf today.

Been ill the last couple of months so haven't done much in the way of art. Feeling much better and thought I'd play around with the charcoal for a bit. I'll post an update on the pastel wolves soon.

Here is a quick update on the wolves. I am still working on the layers, and have put in a lot more detail on the head of the first wolf. Once I have finished this stage I will start putting in the fine hair details to really bring it to life.

Thought I'd post a work in progress this time around, this is one of two wolves in pastel. A little wildlife art makes a nice change from portraits or figurative work. I'll post more updates as it progresses.

Here is my oil painting finished apart from some minor tweaking. This has been taken from an old photo that my mother has. She dated this guy before she married my dad. Pretty glad he's out of the picture.

Here is a little one that was a bit of fun. A few years ago one of the cricket sponsors (a brewery) released these plastic dolls which passed comment when placed in front of the TV when the cricket was being televised. They were a big hit and became somewhat "collector" dolls. The two pictured are David Boone & Shane Warne and they are affectionately known as Boonie & Warnie dolls.

Last year I donated a koala painting to the Hunter Koala Preservation Society to raffle to raise much needed funds. The painting raised $3800 and went towards a new scanner. Here is the painting that I am donating this year. Another koala of course!

I haven't had a lot of time to spend on this one yet - I am madly working on the Damien portrait - I should be able to post some photos in the next couple of weeks.

The local youth are happily modelling for me, so many thanks to Zac for agreeing to model as the extra person. I've been busy in the studio and at work so I apologise for my tardiness in posting. Here is the finished portrait of "Ade", my boss. He's smiling, so I guess he likes it! I've nearly finished the other portrait of my grandson, so I'll post the finished product over the weekend.

I have the honour and privilege of painting Australian Idol and Aria winner Damien Leith. I recently caught up with Damien for his first sitting at the lovely Tower winery in the Hunter Valley. Apart from being a great subject he is an all round nice guy. He is currently on tour around Australia promoting his new album "Remember June". Catch his show if you can, he's awesome. I'll post progress photos of his portrait as it develops.

Here is another one I am working on at the moment - another landscape and I've thoroughly enjoyed doing it. I spent a day on the local beaches taking some reference shots and decided to turn a couple of them into paintings. I still have a fair bit of work to do on the sand and trees but it's coming together nicely.

I've started a new painting of red kangaroos. I thought for something different I'd do them from the back view, so as to concentrate on the texture of their fur. I'm a little undecided about the background at this stage so I decided to block in the roos and I'll choose my background when I'm happy with the animals.

Here are the lillies finished. I didn't overdo the lillies in the forground because I wanted to keep the main focus of the drawing as the reflection. Hope you like it.

After a recent stay at Eaglereach Wilnerness retreat, I have a mountain of location shots that I have been eager to turn into paintings. As a break from the tawnys, I started on this painting. The reflections in the water on this still morning were amazing. I have started putting in the main body of water and have put the base in for the boards on the jetty. The lillies, will go in as the last step once I have all the reflections in place.

Tawny frogmouth painting

The tawnys are really starting to take shape now, I still have a fair bit of work to do on the birds, but I wanted to make a start on the background. The first layer of leaves is down, with only a few more to add to the far background. The bird on the left is still relatively untouched, so I will focus more on that this week.

I am one of 6 artists that have been invited to exhibit at an upcoming wildlife and nature exhibition at a gallery in Tighes Hill, Newcastle, New South Wales. The exhibition runs from 8th July until early August. Hope to see you there!

Tawny Frogmouth Progress

The tawnys are progressing slowly, but so far I am happy with how they are coming together. Today I plan on making a start with the background so I can get a better feel for the lighting and shade.

After much procrastination on this one, I finally got it back out and started making some headway on it. Tawny frogmouths are frequent visitors to my garden - strange but fascinating.

I have started with the one on the right, building up the layers to achieve the softness of the feathers. The background still needs some brightening as a contrast against the birds.

I'll post updates as the painting progresses.

What's been happening...

You might notice from my last blog that I was ill. A chest infection just about wiped me off the planet, but I am pleased to report I am well on the road to recovery now. Just lately, I've been busy in the studio, with a couple of new paintings well underway, and this recently completed commission.
